Clovis Sign Impressed with New Hino-Dino 1800

Clovis Sign Service Inc. of Clovis, New Mexico, is a one-stop shop for any kind of business that wants to get noticed. Its graphics department can design an attractive, attention-getting sign in a variety of formats — molded, embossed, pan-face, lighted ... you name it.

Major oil companies especially appreciate working with a vendor that can coordinate a gas station’s entire look, from canopy image to pumps to store front. “We can create the whole image,” says Clovis’s Buddy Laing. Clovis carries the job from conception through completion, installing finished signs using truckmounted cranes.

Buddy, who wears many hats at Clovis — service technician, safety manager, dispatcher — was instrumental in picking out the company’s latest addition to its fleet of a dozen truck-cranes: a Terex 3670 from Giuffre Bros.

“Clovis owners Jamie and Branon New and I were keeping an eye on the trade magazines,” he says, “and we had noticed the Giuffre Bros. ads. We decided to contact them to ask about pricing.”

“Not only did Giuffre Bros. have great prices,” Buddy says, “but there was a piece of equipment available close by in Phoenix that they had just used in a trade show on the West Coast,” a new Dino 1800 package. Buddy flew to Phoenix to pick it up, completing a deal that took just days.

One of the factors that sold Buddy on the Giuffre Bros. product was immediate availability. The boom truck Clovis Sign chose was the new Hino Toyota model, with the 18-ton Terex crane. This package, supplied exclusively by Giuffre Bros., proved to be the best for their needs and application.

A crane feature that Buddy particularly likes is the dual remotes. “Our operators can work off either side of the truck and clearly see what they’re doing,” he explains. Dual operation is just one of the many “wonderful safety features” Buddy says he likes about the Giuffre Bros. unit.

He also appreciates the remote basket capability, which will carry two men to a height of 80 feet.

Despite all of the safety and convenience features, Buddy admits that he was a little hesitant about the Toyota-powered Hino truck, a new model that was unfamiliar to him. “I think a lot more of it now,” he says with confidence. He has been pleasantly surprised at the great fuel mileage and abundace of power he gets with the Toyota engine.

Sixty years of designing and installing creative signs has brought Clovis’s employee count to 50. In addition to serving a variety of customers in its home state of New Mexico, Clovis Sign does work in the Texas panhandle.
